Many of our customers in the Pacific Northwest spend their weekends riding the Oregon sand dunes and other dune riding areas. Sand is one of the most demanding environments for a Yamaha Banshee engine. Paddle tires on the rear help you gain the traction needed for steep dune hill climbs and sand trail riding, but they also place a much greater load on the engine than standard tires. Keeping those paddles spinning at speed requires both horsepower and sustained high RPM.
One mistake we sometimes see is adding components that let the engine make more power and rev higher, while leaving the stock crankshaft unchanged.
For example, installing high performance components such as Moto Tassinari VForce-4 reeds and aftermarket exhaust pipes can allow a stock engine to rev 1,000-1,500 RPM higher than a full stock setup. While those modifications can produce noticeable power gains, they also increase the stress placed on the stock crankshaft. Over time, that additional load can cause the crankshaft to twist out of phase or even separate, often leading to expensive engine damage.

Every rider has different goals. Some simply want to restore a worn-out stock engine. Others want noticeably more power for the dunes or trails, while some are looking for a highly modified performance engine.
At Re-Do Banshee, we think of engine builds as a progression—from a Stock Engine Rebuild all the way to a WILD performance build. Beyond that are EXTREME competition and racing engines, which involve a different set of priorities.
STOCK Engine Rebuilds
A STOCK engine rebuild is ideal for riders who want dependable near-factory performance.
The goal is to restore reliable engine performance using primarily stock components while replacing worn parts as needed.
One reliability upgrade we strongly recommend is having the stock crankshaft trued and welded before reinstalling it. For a relatively small investment, it can significantly increase engine life. We think of it as inexpensive insurance. We recommend truing and welding every stock crankshaft used in an engine we build or advise on.
MILD Engine Builds
A MILD engine build offers a little more performance than stock while remaining very reliable.
Many stock components remain, but carefully selected upgrades improve power without dramatically increasing maintenance or cost. For many recreational riders, this provides the best value.
MEDIUM Engine Builds
A MEDIUM engine build is where performance really begins to increase. This build offers an excellent balance of increased performance and long-term reliability.
These engines typically combine stock and aftermarket components, often including a +4-Mil stroker crankshaft and other carefully matched upgrades. They're an excellent choice for riders who spend a lot of time in the dunes or want a significantly stronger engine without sacrificing long-term reliability.
Reliability comes from choosing components that complement each other and fit the rider's goals. This is where Re-Do Banshee can help.
WILD Engine Builds
A WILD engine build pushes performance much further.
These engines often include larger stroker crankshafts, bored and trenched engine case modifications, larger cylinders, and other high-performance components. When designed as a complete system, they can still provide excellent reliability while delivering serious power.
This is generally the upper end of what we recommend for recreational riders.
EXTREME Engine Builds
EXTREME engine builds are designed primarily for competition and racing.
Maximum horsepower often comes at the expense of service life, maintenance intervals, and tuning requirements. These engines operate much closer to the limits of their components and require a different approach than recreational engines.
While we understand these combinations, our shop focuses on building dependable recreational engines that deliver outstanding performance without unnecessary compromises.
